Hiking Around Tucson and Arizona

with Kim Beck

Picacho Peak

Picacho Peak State Park is home to Hunter Trail, located at Barrett Loop, about 30 miles north of Tucson, Arizona, west of Interstate 10.

This strenuous 4-mile roundtrip hike is surprising and breathtaking in more than one way-definitely not for inexperienced hikers, pets or children after the saddle, which is about half-way.

The trail stays consistently rugged and rocky from the saddle to the peak. Cables help with the "ropeless" rock-climbing that is necessary to reach the top.

Gloves are recommended. Camping is allowed in the marked campgrounds. Spring brings a magnificent wildflower display.

Picacho is home to the most significant Civil War battle in Arizona-making it a historical point as well. An annual re-enactment in early March tells that story.
